Many may know of Oakland, CA, as the hometown for diverse culture, proud originality, and an active community. The coffee society has been recently rejuvenating in the area due to high demand and growing creativity. With social media there is a growing youth community for coffee. Coffee in Oakland has become a new form of art. From the aesthetically pleasing look, to the balanced taste.
There are many coffee shops in Oakland, but these are our favorite coffee shops.
1. Timeless Coffee (4252 piedmont ave, Oakland, ca)
Timeless coffee located in Oakland, has been a vegan coffee roastery and bakery since 2012. Made fresh in-house daily with homemade beans, they’ve implemented a positive environment! They also give the option to mobile order and pick up in the shop, but also still have the option to dine-in!
2. Coffee Strada (2300 College ave, Berkeley, CA 94704)
Coffee Strada located near UC Berkeley in Berkeley California started as a family owned business and has remained that way since 1989. They specialize in espresso drinks and have maintained their simplicity in creating these drinks through the 30+ years they’ve been open. In store or online you can also find their “Strada Blend” of homemade coffee beans. Coffee Strada’s proud to state they’ve been named “best cafe” and also included in the best 50 coffeehouses in the U.S by Complex Magazine. Strada has a lovely outside option as well as inside seating, they also have a late closing time as a café!
3. Tierra Mia Coffee (2001 Broadway, Oakland, CA 94612)
Tierra Mia Coffee first opened in 2008 in South Gate, a city in Los Angeles California. They now have 20 locations throughout California and one right in the heart of oakland They are most known for their roasted coffee. Not only do they serve delicious coffee but they also bake tasty pastries. Their store has a calming ambience along with tables to eat and drink.
4. Kilovolt Coffee (1829 Mandela Pkwy, Oakland, CA 94607)
Home to West Oakland Kilovolt is dedicated to serving the community as well as those who’d make that commute. They have been open since April 2014. If you are on a time restraint you can order online and pick up at the store. The café features include a printer, tons of outlets, and free wifi. Consistently open from 7am to 2pm. The shop started out on a limb by Ethan Ashley, he noticed the lack of café’s in oakland. He wanted to make it easier on those who had to drive all the way to Berkeley or Emeryville for their coffee. They have survived on the saying, “If you don’t know how, you learn how.” Kilovolt coffee prides themselves on taking care of the Earth in the most Green way possible. Leaving the smallest carbon footprint they possibly can.
5. Red Bay Coffee (3098 E Tenth St, Oakland, CA 94601)
Artisanal Coffee that is award winning, super fresh and ready to brew, with the greatest of customer service. As a Black owned company and a certified B corporation, meaning they meet the highest standards of social and environmental performance. Red Bay Coffee strives to have that same consistency of coffee for its customers. This company not only cares about its customers, but also the Earth‘s needs. You can find Apparel and Drinkware at this location as well as coffee beans.
6. Awaken Cafe & Roasting (1429 Broadway, Oakland, CA 94612)
Awaken Café & Roasting, a staple cafe in the Oakland community, has been around for almost fourteen years. This cafe is more than just a cafe. It’s a “community coffee house,” gear retailer, restaurant, beer and wine bar, and an event venue all in one. Their main focus is to bring people together and launch what is next for Oakland to the world. As for their coffee, which is roasted regularly at Pulley Collective in West Oakland. They've conveniently added the option to order online and pick up at the store! They have social presence on instagram, twitter, along with facebook.
7. Souvenir Coffee Co. (3084 Claremont Ave Berkeley, CA 94705)
"People first, then coffee" … A motto Souvenir coffee lives by, that shows this cafe is solely based on creating community. Souvenir Coffee Co promotes their community involvement through the support of local art, music and media. They sponsor local musicians in public spaces encouraging social interaction. This cafe is Berkeley based and locally roasted, all while providing a conscientious, low waste and green product. Their promise is to serve specialty grade coffee to the everyday coffee drinker. With a modern day look, the café provides inside seating and free wi-fi!
